Poppies are Popping

I had my first sighting of California Poppies in the Napa Valley yesterday…spring is definitely here!
 
  This pic is from one year ago… one of the very first shots I took with the cool and fun Lytro camera I won in the SXSW contest…shot on my way home from picking it up at their Mountain View headquarters.
  Just a couple months later, the camera was stolen and I have been counting pennies to pick up another one ever since! 
Light field technology has some amazing potential to change the game in the coming years!

In the Grip of Winter's Chill

Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating… but it's going to get down into the 40s tonight!!!! I'll be leaving my faucets dripping to prevent pipes from freezing 😉

I never really get tired of the wild mustard that pops up all over the valley during January/February. This is just a quick snap while out running errands in St Helena today.

First Fruits of the Promise

Four Camellias line the walk from our front porch to the driveway. They are loaded with at least 150 buds, but only three have have opened so far…
…I snapped this one today on my way out the door to work (droplets from a light rain)

It's a lesson in patience …it's been three weeks since I posted a photo of one of the buds for +FloralFriday  http://dbclick.org/XAdkGg
…and we're only now able to start enjoying the results.
   Soon the shrubs will be covered with blossoms, and I'll try to catch them in a variety of ways… inspired by the lovely work of  +FloralFriday curator, +Tamara Pruessner.

The Napa Valley is rarely without color…just after all of the holiday lights have been stowed away, the wild mustard flowers start to appear…

There are clumps here and there right now, but the valley floor will be carpeted in a couple more weeks… keeping the vineyards beautiful as we wait for the new green grape leaves to appear.

BTW… Catsup or Ketchup? Discuss… 😉

I've been eyeing the buds on the camelias in our front walkway for over a month…waiting for the day that they would open into their beautiful large pale pink blossoms… 
…but they take their time!  Though I just noticed a few starting to crack open, it will be February before the full glory of these is revealed (and you can be sure that I will revisit them!)

These orchid plants live a pampered life on my brother-in-laws front porch in Eureka, CA. We used this cutting as a bouquet for my mother and father-in-law's 50th wedding anniversary.
