Making Lemonade

You know the old saying… when life gives you lemons…
I love the beauty of the Napa Valley, but in late spring and summer we almost always have clear blue skies… While most people love that, it makes it a lot tougher to do interesting landscape photography!
  
….so the challenge is to find something interesting to put into the frame as you play around for the scant few minutes between harsh sun and sun dipping beyond the western hills.

I just discovered this spot north of Calistoga a few days ago, and you can be sure I'll be back at different times of the year when the sun will drop behind the hills closer to sunset time, and the weather gives us some fun clouds to play with! +Angelika Perry & +Dallas Perry were here to share the fun.

Making Lemonade

I love the beauty of the Napa Valley, but in late spring and summer we almost always have clear blue skies… While most people love that, it makes it a lot tougher to do interesting landscape photography!

….so the challenge is to find something interesting to put into the frame as you play around for the scant few minutes between harsh sun and sun dipping beyond the western hills.

Every Castle Needs a Good Chapel

A fabulous day spent at the lovely +Castello di Amorosa with +Angelika Perry & +Dallas Perry visiting all the way from North Carolina.

Lots of frames to sort through and play with processing, but I thought I'd share a quick edit before heading off to bed tonight…

The Castello is a fabulous place, and a "Can't Miss" stop for anyone visiting the Napa Valley.

Thanks so much again, +Jim Sullivan and your team for all of the hard work you do to make this such awesome place!

The Office Cubicle

Day 4 of my #fivedayquest  , thanks to +Elizabeth Hahn 
5 days / 5 photos / tag a new person each day to join
1 photo for 5 days of your daily life.

I am blessed to live in a rural community, with a short 2-minute drive (or 10-minute walk) to my office on a small college campus.
  As a teacher, I end up doing a lot of work at home (grading, lecture prep, etc.)… and this is my "home-office".
  I love my backyard Redwood tree… with scrub jays and squirrels at play, humming birds feeding, along with the occasional family of deer meandering by… we've even had a coyote take a nap at the edge of the yard, and just yesterday a cute red fox was exploring around in the brush beyond the tree.
  Of course I get focused on the computer screen for hours at a time…but the occasional pause to look at the beauty in the back yard always lifts my spirits.

 +Ron Clifford  once challenged me to get out and shoot something from every possible angle until that something got tired of being shot at….and I did that with this tree…and found some really cool new ways to view it…
 +Colby Brown  once wrote that if you can't find inspiration in your back yard, you're not trying hard enough  and I think that's true even if you don't have a big Redwood tree. Just keep an eye open for the interesting things all around… take a look from a new perspective once in a while…not just in your photography, but in all that you do.

For this fourth day of the five day quest, I tag +Joe Frazee.  Joe, you are under absolutely no pressure to do the fivedayquest, but if you want to, you can! Just post a photo of daily life for five days. :-)

I'll Take Pansy as a Complement

They're not exotic…they can be found at any Home Depot or Lowes, ready for transplanting… but I love it when people (and companies) take the time to beautify their property with these little jewels. 

Seeing these made me stop and think… Am I doing my part to make the world around me just a bit more beautiful for those I interact with? How about you?

I found this lovely mix of colorful Pansies planted outside the Student Center at the college where I teach.

What Do You Want for Your Birthday?

I have the sweetest wife in the world. When I asked her what her perfect birthday would be, she said "to hike Mt St Helena with you!"
  So that's what we did… it's a 5-mile hike to the top of the 4,340-ft-peak (10 miles round-trip), with breathtaking vistas of Napa, Sonoma, and Lake counties.
  There is nothing so special as time spent with the one you love… so we both got our favorite gifts today!

What did the grape say when the elephant stepped on him?

Yeah, it's an old silly joke I heard when I was a kid…
…Nothing…he just let out a little wine…
These Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are about to get a stomping much more thorough than an elephant's foot, as the Napa Valley Crush is about to begin.
Soon the aroma of the freshly crushed grapes will fill the valley as the wineries start picking, transporting, and processing.
  These grapes are in a vineyard near St Helena, in the north end of the valley.
